The Chamber views tourism as an important component of the local business environment overall, and its Tourism Committee is active in promoting local development opportunities.
The Timmins Chamber of Commerce also houses the Tourism Information Centre for local residents and the thousands of travelers who visit Timmins each year. The TIC contains information and pamphlets on local, regional and national tourist destinations. During the busier summer months, the centre is staffed by tourism information consultants.
Also, complimentary maps of the City of Timmins are available at the TIC.
The Timmins Gold Mine Tour is a must-see attraction where visitors can tour a former working mine, both above- and underground. The tour begins in the "dry" where you'll change into mining coveralls, boots and a hat with a headlamp. You'll take an easy walk through the underground tunnels with an experienced former miner as your guide. After the tour, you can check out a restored "Hollinger House" to see how the typical miner and his family lived 70 years ago. There are many other attractions at this site, so plan to spend a half a day here. For more information and tour schedules, visit www.timminsgoldminetour.com.
Within the City limits is a forest oasis full of wildlife that visitors can explore by tractor-wagon in a fascinating two-hour tour. Expect to see moose, deer, caribou, elk and buffalo. Cedar Meadows offers group tours by appointment. Visit their website at www.cedarmeadows.com for more information.
Tourism Outdoors is a project led by the Chamber's tourism committee, with the support of a number of community partners. The objective of the site is to promote the hundreds of kilometres of recreational trails and waterways in and around the City. Many of these trails are off the beaten track yet well-maintained and easy to access, perfect opportunities for a day of cycling, nature walking or bird watching. Visit the website at www.timminsoutdoors.ca for maps and descriptions of the trails and canoe routes.
